Which personality type makes the best Data Owner?
In the follow-up comments to my “I’m Spartacus” article, I responded to a question from “Word Luv” on the characteristics of Data Owner, proposing that a Jungian personality type (a.k.a. Myers-Briggs profile) of “ENTJ” would be a good candidate. 

It was a bit of a throw-away observation, and in a thread on LinkedIn, poster Shane Pinson said he disagreed with me; he also suggested that I might want to cover my rationale in a follow-up blog…. So Shane, this is for you!

I’m certainly not going to give an full treatise on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator schema here. (For one thing, I’m not a trained psychologist, although my wife studied a Psychology degree as a mature student, so I reckon I should get some “proxy” study credits!). 

But Shane’s query certainly got me thinking more about the qualities of a good Data Owner, so (with thanks to MyPersonality.info for summarising the ENTJ personality and iteeeestudents for the matrix diagram) let’s look at some of their traits:
  • ENTJs are strategic, organized and possess natural leadership qualities.
  • They are master coordinators that can effectively give direction to groups.
  • They are able to understand complicated organizational situations and quick to develop intelligent solutions.
  • ENTJs are outspoken and will not hesitate to speak of their plans for improvement.
  • They are decisive and value knowledge, efficiency and competence.
  • ENTJs live in a world of possibilities where they see all sorts challenges to be surmounted, and they want to be the ones responsible for surmounting them.
  • They are quick to grasp complexities
  • They have ability to absorb a large amount of impersonal information
  • They make quick and decisive judgments.
  • They are curious about new ideas and theories, evaluating them in terms of their goals. They are very efficient, competitive, strategic, and task focused.
  • Organized, scheduled and orderly.
  • Scientific and knowledge oriented (ENTJs are rational people and they use common sense to deal with almost anything.)
If we now compare those traits with the role the data owner is expected to play, I think it becomes clear that the ENTJ personality type is going to be a strong advocate and champion; their natural leadership traits, rationality and ability to communicate the big picture will bringing focus, energy and impetus to any data definition and data quality challenges, while cutting through any social inertia.

It's not all good news of course, and the ENTJ personality type does come with some drawbacks:
  • ENTJs can be self-centered, arrogant or even narcissistic (ENTJs are smart and they want everyone to know it. They like themselves, sometimes too much.)
  • They can be opinionated or stubborn (might believe they're always right).
  • They may set the bar too high (have unrealistic dreams and goals).
  • ENTJs sometimes make decisions too fast.
  • The are typically very critical about incompetency and inefficiency.
  • They don't give compliments easily.
… which is why in our Data Governance context, the Data Owner needs the assistance and contribution of their appointed Data Stewards. And while we’re on the subject, I also thought a little about the personality traits of an ideal Steward. The Steward must complement the Owner's capabilities, be able to deal with more detailed issues and be able to follow through tasks to completion. I think the ISTJ type (sometimes referred to as “Inspectors”) might fit the bill:
  • ISTJs have a keen sense of right and wrong, especially in their area of interest and/or responsibility.
  • They are noted for devotion to duty.
  • ISTJs are very loyal, faithful, and dependable.
  • They place great importance on honesty and integrity.
  • They believe in thoroughness. A half-finished job is not a job well done.
  • They are "good citizens" who can be depended on to do the right thing.
  • ISTJs get things done on a timely basis. They honour deadlines.
  • They established procedures and schedules, and are uncomfortable with those who do not do the same.
  • As long as ISTJ’s can fulfil their responsibilities, they feel useful and satisfied.

What do you think? Have I got it right? Is the ENTJ what we want in our Data Owners? And does personality really matter in the struggle to bring governance to the world of data?

    Cant help being facetious with this one - I think people with star sign Pisces or Saggitarius born with the moon in the third house and Saturn in fifth also make great data owners :)
    Jokes aside, I think as long as the expectations and benefits to the owners and organisation at large are made clear, people will take up the role of the data owner and execute it in their own style.

  2. Hi Alan

    If it were all natural temperament and no conditioning from our environment then I would say yes, but as people mature they can and do take on the characteristics of the other types (even more so because we are unlikely to be pure types anyway). I think the characteristics match the types so those types would probably good to spot and use in the first instance, especially if you are looking for allies and hard-working people to support you.

    Which type would be the data governance manager and what type of people would you want around you in your team? INTJs with support from ENFJ/Ps?

  3. Thanks for your comments Amar & Adrian. I think the core Data Governance team needs to be led by an evangelist, with good detailed "doers" in support. Maybe an ENFJ leader with ISTP and ENTP team members?

    The challenge comes when you get a poor match of "type" for a role - introverted, wish-washy INFP types appointed to the "Owner" role aren't going to cut it! And you don't want an ENTJ bully-boy like me in situations where tact, diplomacy and patience are the order of the day!

  4. I think an ENTJ can also be referred to as a bull in a china shop, so the compliment of ISTJs will create a balanced approach. The drive delivered by the ENTJ is essential in my opinion to ensure DG is pushed throughout the whole company, but the ISTJ should bring in a softer human approach when the hammer doesn't work work. So in essence, I agree with your analysis but also see ENTJ as 'Highlander' (http://informationaction.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/who-is-highlander.html)

    With the post on "who is the Highlander", I think my central point is that *someone* has to be accountable - "one throat to choke" as someone once put it to me!
